Good work lighting is one of those tools you notice most when you do not have it. A flashlight in one hand makes a two-hand job harder, an extension cord becomes another thing to trip over, and a light sitting on the floor often throws shadows exactly where you are trying to work.

1. Start with the mounting system
A magnetic work light is only useful if it stays where you put it. Look for a base that can attach securely to steel surfaces on a service body, toolbox, equipment frame, shop bench, or other suitable metal surface. Multiple magnets can give you more placement options and help keep the light stable.
Remember that magnets need a ferrous surface. Aluminum body panels, plastic covers, and some stainless surfaces may not provide a useful attachment point, so a hook or stable freestanding base is still valuable.
2. Look for a pivoting light head
Mounting the light is only half the job. You also need to aim it. A pivoting head lets you place the base where it is secure and then direct the beam into the work area instead of moving the entire light every time your position changes.
This is especially useful around compressors, engine bays, under equipment, inside service bodies, and during roadside repairs where the best mounting point may not be directly in front of the work.
3. Multiple brightness levels beat one fixed setting
Maximum output is useful for lighting a large area, but full brightness is not always what you need. Close-up work can create glare, while a lower setting can be more comfortable for inspection and routine tasks. A light with multiple brightness modes gives you more control over how much light you actually put on the job.
4. Match the light to the battery platform you already carry
For a cordless tool user, battery compatibility can matter as much as the light itself. If your truck or toolbox is already built around one battery platform, choosing a compatible work light means you do not have to add another charger and another battery system to your setup.
